Explore Our Archives!

Skate School has an extensive video and magazine library covering 5 decades of skateboard history. Explore the earliest issues of Skateboarder Magazine, Skateboard World, Thrasher and others that helped to spread the stoke world wide throughout the 70`s, 80`s and 90`s. You will laugh out loud at some of the long forgotten products and ideas.

Did you know that Traditional Skateboarding started out barefooted with no grip tape? That clay wheels were considered an improvement, or that Skate Teams used to wear Team Jerseys? The first `energy` drink to sponsor skateboarders and skate events world wide was Pepsi!

We also have some of the original black and white and feature films archived, and the VHS tapes that revolutionized how we learned about what was happening in the 1980`s. These introduced new talent like the the Santa Cruz Team and the Bones Brigade. Then came the modern era of DVD`s that are so prolific today and are now rapidly being replaced by You Tube.

Skate Schools walls and halls are filled with many of the most important achievements and innovations of our sport and you can spend hours delving into the amazing history of Tradtional Skateboarding!

Online Courses

History and Vocabulary of Skateboarding

The online course starts with learning the history and vocabulary of our sport which began with the Surfing terms Backside and Frontside. You`ll then explore how this vocabulary became intertwined with the evolution of Equipment, Terrain and Talent. Each advancement in one area then led to advancements in the next two, a never ending cycle that continues to this day. Frontside kick turns precede frontside grinds, which precede frontside airs etc.

You`ll learn how the vocabulary that resulted from this synergy has shaped the way we describe the evolution of the `tricks` and terrain that cover 5 decades of skating. We`ll also cover the influence that skateboarding has had on all of the other board sports in both moves and vocabulary, including finding it`s way back into surfing!

For your `Final Exam` you will pick a particular era and choose an example demonstrating this relationship of Equipment, Terrain and Talent.

Some of this course is also included in the Instructor Certification Programs because we feel it`s very important that instructors know the roots of our sport.
